It was before the tattoos and nose ring. I got away with it because I looked like an Amish-esque white girl. They didn’t even question me; they just let me leave.
It’s difficult for me to think about how a person of color would have had a completely different experience.
I feel like people now at least assume I smoke pot.
But I still don’t get harassed by police, I don’t get followed around the store. I’m still seen as relatively harmless.
